Akshay Kumar wasn’t having much luck at the box office since 2022 until his 2023 film OMG 2 hit theatres and became a success. Before OMG 2 revived his streak, the actor’s film Selfiee released in theatres but turned out to be a box-office failure. In a recent interaction, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, who produced Selfiee (2023), revealed details about Akshay’s remuneration for the film.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, Prithviraj talked about Akshay’s generosity and revealed that he refused to take any money for Selfiee, adding a condition that he would only accept his fee if the movie became a hit. He said, “I have produced a film with Akshay Kumar, sir. He did not take a single rupee. He only said, ‘If the film makes money, then I’ll take my remuneration.’ The film did not do well, and he did not take any money.”
Right after Selfiee’s failure, OMG 2 released in theatres, giving Akshay Kumar a much-needed break from his string of flops. However, this success was short-lived, as his next four films—Mission Raniganj, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Sarfira, and Khel Khel Mein—also failed to perform at the box office.
Selfiee was a remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Driving Licence, which starred Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role and was also produced by him. The film revolves around a rivalry between an RTO inspector and a prominent actor. Unlike Selfiee, the original Malayalam film was a box-office success.
On the professional front, Akshay Kumar will next be seen in Jolly LLB 3. He also has Welcome to the Jungle, Housefull 5, Hera Pheri 3, and Kesari Chapter 2 in the pipeline.
