Pooja Bhatt was a popular actor in the 1990s and often collaborated with her filmmaker father, Mahesh Bhatt. In a recent chat, Pooja recalled one of the most important lessons about the economics of movie-making that she learnt on her father’s film set, which, perhaps, the current generation is completely unaware of. In a chat with Avtar Gill on her show, The Pooja Bhatt Show, she shared that she was once yelled at by Mithun Chakraborty in the middle of the street because she asked for another take.

She shared, “We were shooting for Naaraaz in Malaysia, we were shooting on the road. You know my father, he doesn’t like crowds, he starts getting very agitated. So one take happens, second take happens, and then he was like, ‘Okay fine, let’s go.’ But I stopped.” Pooja shared that Mithun Chakraborty, who was her co-star here, asked her what happened. “I said, ‘No Mithun da, it was not a good shot’. In the middle of the road, he just said, ‘Eh, Aamir Khan ka bhoot tumhare andar se nikalo, kya stock ghar se laa rahi ho? (Get Aamir Khan’s spirit out of you. Are you buying the raw stock?)’”

Before digital cameras, films were shot on raw stock, and every time the camera rolled, the stock would be used and added to the film’s budget. Actors were thus told to rehearse beforehand so extra stock wasn’t wasted on set. And it wasn’t usually up to them to ask for another take.

Before Naaraaz, Pooja had worked with Aamir Khan in Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahi, which was also directed by her father. Aamir and Mahesh did not see eye to eye during the making of that film, as Mahesh perceived Aamir as someone who was a ‘victim’ of his idea of perfection. In a chat with Pinkvilla, Mahesh described Aamir as “a sincere boy but a victim of an ailment of the burden of perfection which kind of weighs you and people around you.” In another chat with Radio Nasha, he shared that Aamir discussed his cap in the film for 10 hours. “He discussed what the cap should look like for 10 hours,” Mahesh recalled.
