Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Pathaan received a lot of love from the audience as soon as it released but, shortly before the release of the Siddharth Anand film, things looked quite bleak for the makers with many political outfits calling for a boycott of the film. The controversy ignited after the release of the film’s first song ‘Besharam Rang’, where many objected to the colour of Padukone’s bikini. There were calls to remove the song from the film, or change the colour of the costume. However, this did not happen.
Now, months after the release of the film, Siddharth has opened up about why he chose the saffron bikini for the song. Speaking at the News18 Rising India summit 2023, Anand said that he chose the costume “randomly” and “never gave it too much thought.” “The colour was looking nice. It was sunny, the grass was greener and the water was blue and the orange colour was looking good,” he said. He added, ” We thought when the audience would watch it they would understand that our intent was not wrong.”
The War director said the boycott calls were “white noise” and they were “not scared.” “We knew that there was nothing objectionable in our film,” he said.
Siddharth said that he would not blame the audience for reacting on the controversy as they had not watched the film until then, and appreciated how the audience “flocked to the theatres when the film was released.” He added, “They (the audience) proved the whole boycott movement wrong. And when you are calling for a boycott of a star or a movie, you are not seeing how many people’s livelihood is dependent on that particular movie especially if it works. At least three hundred people work on a film every day. And when the shoot gets over so many VFX artists work on the post production. It’s very easy to say boycott, that too, without reason.”
Also starring John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana, with an extended cameo by Salman Khan, Pathaan earned Rs 1049.60 crore worldwide gross, with Rs 657.25 crore in the domestic market.
