National Award-winning actor Pankaj Tripathi graced the fifth edition of Expresso held in Mumbai on Thursday. During the candid conversation, Pankaj opened up about his early struggles in the city, including a surprising moment when his photo ended up on a “Wanted” board at a police station set.
Elaborating on the incident, the actor said, “There was no social media and a handful of casting agencies. These casting agencies have increased now. Earlier, we just had to go from door to door claiming that we are actors. They used to keep a cardboard carton in which everyone can come and put their photos. At the end of the day, the carton is sent to the floor above to the assistant’s office. I put my pictures in so many such cartons.”
He continued, “Once, a friend of mine got cast in a crime show somewhere. It was a police station setup. He saw a ‘WANTED’ board hanging there on the set. My friend called me and said, ‘Arey wanted mai teri photo daal di hai.’ I said, ‘Aise kaise?’ I recalled that I had left many of my photos at their office. So, when the art department needed any thief or gangster pictures for the ‘Wanted’ board, they just used those pictures, so mine was up there once.”
Pankaj Tripathi further shared that being spiritual helped him a lot during his struggling days. He said, “It supported me a lot. It helps in saving your hope, there’s a reassurance that everything will happen. We are humans, we have limited capacity, leave everything to God after that. I do the same and leave it to God.”
The actor added, “Spirituality has helped me understand that I should never do wrong to anyone. I don’t lie to anyone. I have no enemity with anyone. I forgive easily. Spirituality has imbibed this in me. I felt humiliated at times while being sent back from an office, but I hold no grudge against anyone in the industry. But now, there are so many scripts that come my way, I am trying to learn how to say no; its very difficult for me. I came to Mumbai with a desire to act and for my survival, I didn’t have any driving force. I was just doing theatre. Till date, I don’t realise or believe that things have changed so much. I never thought this would happen, sometimes I feel that I am dreaming.”
