Anuja secured a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the 97th Academy Awards on Thursday. The film was among the five movies that made the cut out of the fifteen films that were shortlisted previously. Reacting to its nomination, one of the film’s producers, Mindy Kaling shared a long note on her Instagram, expressing her happiness.
Mindy wrote, “#AnujaTheFilm is headed to the Oscars! A story of resilience, sisterhood, and hope – we’re incredibly honored to be nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards 2025.”

She added, “It has been such an honor to produce this short film and learn from the artists involved.” She also thanked the film’s director Adam J Graves and his wife Suchitra Mattai. Her post also mentioned appreciation for child actor Sajda Pathan.
Anuja co-producer Guneet Monga also took to her Instagram handle to share her excitement. Guneet wrote, “Incredibly honoured for this nomination at the 97th Oscars. It is a privilege to share the story of Anuja, representing the work of Salaam Baalak Trust India.”
She added, “Ultimately it is a celebration of all the beautiful children who face dire circumstances everyday around the world. Even through unimaginable odds, they show us there is reason to smile.”
The producer concluded, “This nomination is a testament to how a story made with all heart can transcend all borders, sparking meaningful conversations about education, child labour rights, and the dreams of young children everywhere.”

Besides Anuja, A Lien, The Last Ranger, I’m not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent were nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category.
Anuja follows a gifted nine-year-old girl who, alongside her sister Palak, faces a life-changing opportunity that tests their bond and mirrors the struggles of girls worldwide. Apart from Mindy Kaling and Guneet Monga, actor Priyanka Chopra is also one of the film’s producers.
