Oscars 2023 had a special RRR moment as singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava performed the Academy Award-nominated Naatu Naatu. The rousing RRR anthem received a standing ovation and huge applause.
Actor Deepika Padukone, who introduced the team at the 95th Academy Awards had to stop multiple times with cheers and hoots as she introduced the team.
Oscars reproduced the setting of the song, originally shot at Ukraine’s Presidential Palace in Kyiv. As energetic dancers, including Lauren Gottleib, performed the dance steps, the audience broke into loud cheers. The song ended with the guests at Dolby Theatre on their feet. Videos show a smiling SS Rajamouli and the RRR team — composer MM Keeravani, actors Ram Charan and NTR Jr, cheering from the back row.
Earlier, Deepika was also interrupted by hoots as she spoke about RRR. Dressed in a gorgeous black gown, Deepika smiled at the interruptions and carried on. She called Naatu Naatu ‘a global sensation’ and ‘a banger’ as she spoke about how audiences across the world are dancing to the chartbuster. “Do you know Naatu, because if you don’t, you are about to,” she said.
The song has been nominated in Best original Song category at Oscars; it had earlier won a Golden Globe in the same category. The song has earned a massive popularity across the world. On YouTube, the song got over 124 million views and also became a viral sensation on social media. The song won big at the 80th Golden Globe Awards as MM Keeravaani picked up the Best Original Song trophy.
