The 95th Academy Awards saw The Elephant Whisperers and RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” emerge as winners but the third nomination from India, All That Breathes, did not win the Documentary Feature Oscar.
Guneet Monga, the producer of The Elephant Whisperers, took to Twitter to pen a note for All That Breathes director Shaunak Sen. “The world needs to see the brilliance of the cinema you create,” she wrote. Her tweets further read, “Thank you for your contribution to Indian cinema and for reminding us of the beauty and importance of preserving our world.”
Guneet listed the various international accolades garnered by All That Breathes and said that she would “always put Shaunak Sen’s name as one of the most important filmmakers from India for the world to watch.” She concluded her note by writing, “Yesterday’s Oscars may have passed, but the impact of ‘All That Breathes’ and its visionary director will continue to inspire and touch hearts.”
Earlier today, Shaunak Sen took to Instagram to thank all those who supported him and said that the team of All That Breathes director was “low for about an hour”, but “were soon distracted into equanimity amidst the whirl of glittery people and things.” The filmmaker shared that he will next figure out the India release of his documentary as “HBO has ended its deal in India with Hotstar.”
Shaunak congratulated the team of The Elephant Whisperers and RRR and wrote, “Hugest congratulations to all the winning films from India!”
He shared a long note on Instagram with a series of photos. His note read, “So many chin-uppy messages of encouragement/support since yesterday. We were low for about an hour, but we’re soon distracted into equanimity amidst the whirl of glittery people and things. Brain is still to wrap around the fact that this is the end of this chapter. Next we’ll be working hard to figure India distribution (HBO has ended its deal in India with Hotstar it appears, and we’re figuring out which platform it’ll come out on now). For now, very very nice to share this bizarre, swollen day with the brothers, and so many members of our crew. Hugest congratulations to all the winning films from India! Here’s a quick (chronological) line of pictures of the day as it progressed. (I’ll probably end up sharing another round of pictures, sorry 🙏.)”
All That Breathes won the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. It won the Golden Eye at the Cannes Film Festival. It was also listed as one of the Top 5 Documentaries by the National Board of Review, along with many other international honours.
