Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s estranged wife Aaliya Siddiqui is busy promoting her production venture Holy Cow, which is all set to start streaming on Amazon Prime Video from April 21. Aaliya, in this interview with indianexpress.com, opens up about Holy Cow and how she will soon start directing films. The filmmaker also gives an update on her divorce proceedings with Nawazuddin.
Talking about Holy Cow, Aaliya said, “We made this film in 2019 and it got delayed due to the pandemic. Holy Cow is the story of a Muslim man who has a cow named Rukhsaar and how the cow gets lost. Because the cow gets lost, the village wonders if the cow is lost or if it has been butchered. His Hindu friend helps him search for the cow. The film is about this journey presented in a very interesting way. The film features talented actors like Sanjay Mishra, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nawaz and Sadiya Siddiqui. I have also done a small role in the movie. The film has released in theatres in 2022 and now it will be streaming on Amazon Prime Video from April 21.”
Aaliya further discussed how OTT is a good platform to bring small films with good subjects to audiences.
“Small filmmakers like us don’t have the resources to push the film big time during its theatrical release. We can’t put in too much money either. Good films which are made on a small scale and budget don’t get the right opportunity (in theatricals), and we can’t blame the audience. The audience is used to watching what they’ve been shown for years. As a producer I think it is of utmost importance to make good films and to make sure that these films reach the audience. In this case the audience’s love is more important than the box office collection. It’s not that people didn’t watch Holy Cow at all, some did. It had a decent release and it has got good ratings on IMDb also. I think people who missed watching good films in cinemas can catch it on OTT. So that’s a good thing for audiences as well as the makers, especially for small films which have good actors and great subjects,” she said.
Earlier this year, there were reports of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Aaliya finally heading towards divorce. When asked how she’s coping with the divorce, Aaliya shared that the duo is not officially divorced yet. Giving an update on their divorce, Aaliya shared, “No, the divorce is not official yet. The court has asked us to solve our problems mutually as it is the matter of our children’s lives. The court has been extremely supportive, they are doing everything to help our family. The judge has also taken a good decision where they have told our children that they can stay wherever they feel comfortable, whether it is Dubai or in India. The court has asked to mutually resolve it.”
When asked how are their children Shora and Yaani coping with the situation, she said, “Of course it is a tough time, but my kids are very supportive. My daughter is supporting me a lot.”
Aaliya then opened up about how, after being on the production side, she wants to become a director next. She said, “I want to direct films and I have directed a short film too. I’m in the process of releasing it soon.”
Revealing that her next venture will be a biopic based on a Padwani folk singer from Chhattisgarh, Aaliya shared, “I am also working on a biopic of a Padwani folk singer from Chhattisgarh who is the recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan. I have gotten the rights to make a film on her. I have also narrated the script to a few big people in the industry. I wouldn’t want to name them just yet. We have someone coming onboard for direction too. But there are a few internal problems, meri khud ki problems jo chal rahi hai. Once that’s sorted out, I’ll be announcing the project.”
Holy Cow, directed by Sai Kabir, will stream on Amazon Prime Video from April 21.
