Actor Naga Chaitanya has opened up about the failure of his Bollywood debut Laal Singh Chaddha and said the main reason he had agreed to do the film was because he wanted to learn from superstar Aamir Khan, who featured in the film in the titular role.
In Laal Singh Chaddha, which was the Hindi adaptation of Tom Hanks’ Forest Gump, Naga played the role of Balaraju “Bala” Bodi, Laal’s colleague in the Indian Army and his good friend.
In an interview with Mirchi 9, Naga Chaitanya said Laal Singh Chaddha gave him the opportunity to collaborate with Aamir Khan for over five months, which was an unforgettable learning experience.
“The main reason for me to do that project was to travel with Aamir sir. As an actor, I wished I get to travel with him for just 2 days to learn from him. I walked into the project with this mindset. But I got to work with him for 5-6 months. There was a lot of honesty, even in the way Aamir sir was working.”
The actor said he just followed Aamir in this journey, which changed him by the end of the filming. “I have no regrets at all. It’s unfortunate that the movie didn’t work out but I came out as an evolved person, both professionally and personally. It’s because of what he taught me.”
Released last August, Laal Singh Chaddha was Aamir Khan’s first theatrical release in four years, after the box office bomb Thugs of Hindostan. But the Advait Chandan directorial, which also featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, had a muted release and ended up netting a disastrous Rs 55 crore lifetime collection in its box office run.
Post Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir backed out of a film he was reportedly doing with Shubh Mangal director RS Prasanna. He is yet to announce his next.
Naga Chaitanya, meanwhile, is awaiting the release of his next, Custody. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the film will be released in Tamil and Telugu on May 12.
