Mukesh Chhabra nurses regrets. The casting director opened up about the low phase of his life, which involved not handling his romantic relationship “nicely” and also hurting actor Kriti Sanon, whom he considers his sister. In an interview with Neelesh Misra, Mukesh Chhabra was asked if he has any lasting regrets. The casting director spoke about his “most beautiful relationship,” which he lost at a time when he was blinded by arrogance. He listed this breakup as among the most biting personal failures that he has dealt with in his life, after his mother’s death and losing his close friend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

He spoke about hurting Kriti Sanon over a “lie,” and said, “Kriti is like my sister, I love her as much as I love my real sister. There was a situation, where I lied about her. When she learnt about it, she was quite hurt. It took me a lot of years to fix that.”

In the same interview, he spoke about not treating the love of his life with the respect that they deserved. “It was my love, which lasted for six-seven years. But I lost that. There is the sadness of losing my mother, Sushant Singh Rajput, and also this. I tried hard, but I lost it. During my struggling days in Mumbai when I didn’t have money, she was with me, but I lost her, because of pride. That’s a lifelong regret. I tried to mend it, but it couldn’t happen,” he said.

The casting director said he doesn’t want to “remember those six months” of his life, when things started falling apart because of his arrogance. The woman in question, Chhabra said, got married last October. “So, a friend said that now the chapter was over and the last sliver of hope was gone. It is an incomplete love story… My mother’s passing away will bother me for the rest of my life and this relationship, which I couldn’t complete, which I couldn’t handle nicely… It is my mistake. I know what I did. I am happy she is happily settled,” he added.

Mukesh Chhabra made his directorial debut with Dil Bechara, starring Sushant Singh Rajput. It was the actor’s last film, and was released posthumously. More recently, Chhabra did the casting for Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila, which opened to rave reviews.
