Whenever there is a discussion on stardom and star power, there is always a mention of actor Rajesh Khanna. There are several iconic stories revealing the kind of things his fans did for him. Some wrote letters to him in blood, others would get married to his photo. People even fought for the dust under his car wheels. Women put it on their heads, claiming they are now married to the star. It was a high that no Indian actor had ever experienced. But as crazy as his fandom was, his fall was equally disturbing. And this sudden rise and fall took a toll on the actor. However, one star who managed to keep his heads low despite all the success is actor Amitabh Bachchan.
In a recent interview with Filmfare, actress Moushumi Chatterjee shared how Amitabh Bachchan was always mindful of his words and mostly behaved in a specific manner the whole time to manage his image of a bigger star. She said, “Amitabh Bachchan is a very intelligent man. He always uses politically right words. I sometimes pity him because I think most of the time he is only performing because that is all that he knows. I might be wrong but that’s how I feel about him. It is because of his image. He has a huge image, which nobody else has managed to achieve.”
Sharing how Amitabh Bachchan is different from Rajesh Khanna, Moushumi said, “Amitabh has managed to stay grounded despite immense success. Something that Rajesh Khanna failed at. He was blown up with his success. As the saying goes: ‘Ek anpadh gunda aur ek padhe likhe gunde mein bahaut farq hota hai’ (There is always a difference between a literate and illiterate goon) . I have never seen Amitabh Bachchan with sycophants. However, Rajesh Khanna was always surrounded by these people. He needed that attention and pampering.”
Moushumi expressed grief while she spoke about Rajesh Khanna’s fall. She said, “It is sad how it all got into his head and he saw a massive fall. It happened very drastically for him. There was a point when he was on top, nobody has seen that high.”
Previously talking about the superstar, Moushumi recalled how rajesh once made a distasteful remark about her daughter asking who was her father Jayanta Mukherjee or Vinod Mehra. Talking to Nayandeep Rakshith, the actress said, “A lot of people who pass nasty remarks don’t realise that they are actually showing who they are. You come from that surrounding. Nobody thought I can give it back. I was always like that. I never cared if you are a superhero or super heroine or anything like that. I think as a human being. If you are super, even while working as a spot boy, salute from me.”
Moushumi, however, continued to work with the star on screen even after the incident.
