Actor Monica Bedi, who was best known in the 1990s for being in a relationship with gangster Abu Salem, has said that even though she is open to finding love, she feels unable to actually do anything about it. She admitted that her past has not only affected her professional prospects, but also her romantic life.
Asked about her love life in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Monica said, “Strange things happen to me, they have been happening for so many years. I don’t know what’s wrong with the guys. You know what’s happening to me? I’m being approached by very young guys. How is that going to work?” She said that she doesn’t let things escalate to a point where one of them gets their heart broken, so she puts a stop to it immediately. She also said that she is a ‘very loyal person’ in relationships, and has never gone around looking for ‘time pass’ connections.
She continued, “It’s our mindset also; we think that men should always be older than women in a relationship. I actually have friends who have very young partners, and they’re so happy. They get along so well. They’re having so much fun.” Monica cited the examples of Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra as female actors who have younger husbands, and said, “But I’m orthodox.”
Monica added, “I’m not afraid of love, I have no problem with love. But I don’t want to make a mistake again… Anyway people don’t seem to have the courage to approach me, and if they do, I shoo them away. My friends laugh at me… I want to settle down, I also feel alone — alone, not lonely — and when I see people with their families during festivals, it hits me… But most men my age are already married, and the ones that are left are too young.”
Monica appeared in Hindi films such as Surakshaa, Ek Phool Teen Kante and Jodi No 1. She also also appeared as a contestant on reality shows Bigg Boss and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, and has starred in the TV show Saraswatichandra, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
