Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has opened up about facing discrimination because of his skin colour when he first entered the film industry. He revealed that top actors refused to work with him because of his color and to overcome this, Mithun developed unique dance moves to divert attention from his appearance. The actor also said that Zeenat Aman was the first actor who said that “he looks fantastic.”
In an interview with Radio Nasha, Mithun said, “Looking at me, people’s expectations increased and they thought that even my son can become an actor despite living in a chawl or village. I became a common man’s hero. It was a very big thing for me to become a superstar of a common man.”
The veteran actor added, “I thought that if I danced with my legs, nobody would see my colour and that happened. My dance made people forget my colour. Nobody imagined a hero with my colour. I used to feel very bad and I used to cry.”
The actor said that Zeenat Aman was the first “A-grade actor” he worked with and added that at the time, nobody else was willing to work with him. “Nobody wanted to work with me because I am not an acceptable hero. Working with me would not get them fame and that’s why nobody wanted to work with me. But then came Zeenat Aman ji. She said ‘He is so good, he looks fantastic, he looks so good.’ And after that, there was no stopping,” he recalled.
Mithun appeared in films like Disco Dancer, Dance Dance, Prem Pratigya, and Agneepath among others. On the work front, he was recently seen in Vivek Agnihotri’s film The Kashmir Files.
