Amid reports of a biopic based on the life of Meena Kumari, the actor’s stepson, Tajdar Amrohi, son of filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, reportedly threatened legal action against designer-filmmaker Manish Malhotra, who is said to be making a film on the late actor. Now, Tajdar, in a new interview, has said that there has been no legal action yet, and “everything is going out of proportion.”
As per reports, Tajdar was threatening to sue Manish, who was planning to make his directorial debut with a Meena Kumari biopic reportedly starring Kriti Sanon. In a chat with Bollywood Bubble, Tajdar said that when he spoke to his lawyer, and they decided to not take any steps as the film has not even started yet, and that he had only “heard about” it then. “Even big production houses like to be in news. So, he told me that in case they decide to shelve the project in future, it would come across as I am publicity hungry. I am making enemies in vain. I don’t want to do that. People would think I am publicity hungry, but I am not that way,” he said.
Speaking about Manish, Tajdar said that the designer is a “very good person.” “He has done nothing wrong with me, why should I spoil his image. There can be a misunderstanding and the film hasn’t even started yet. He is a friend of me and my family,” he shared. But, he added that Manish is yet to call him to seek an NOC. When asked if he has reached out to the designer, Tajdar said, “Why should I talk to him? He should be the one calling me.”
He also spoke about Kriti, who is rumoured to be leading the project. “Whenever I meet her, I will tell her I am sorry if whatever I said hurt her. All that I said was for the person who is going to do the film, be it you or someone else. I’ll tell her you are a very popular and good actress and you might think of me as an enemy, but I am not one. Please treat me as your friend and advisor,” he said.
Tajdar questioned why filmmakers are keen on making a film about Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi, but not on any of the other popular yesteryear actors. “Is this the only couple in Bollywood left to make a film on? With all due respect to Nargis ji, Vyjanthimala ji, Reena Rai, Madhubala, Parveen Babi, Geeta Bali, there are many names. Why aren’t they making films on them? Why are they only behind my parents?” he asked.
Meena Kumari, who is still regarded as one of the most talented actors of Indian cinema, passed away in 1972 at the age of 38.
