Mahesh Bhatt has lived an eclectic life and during a recent chat with his daughter Pooja on her new podcast, he recalled a strange chapter of his life where he tried to feed a potential financier what he thought was human flesh. Mahesh said that he did so upon the instructions of a tantrik in Varanasi, and believed that this would change his fortune.
In a chat on The Pooja Bhatt Show, Mahesh said that back when he was struggling as a filmmaker in his 20s, his friend Arun Desai, who was also struggling alongside him, presented him a proposal – to meet a potential financier of films in Gaya, Bihar. But, Arun said that he wanted to make this trip via Varanasi, as his guru lived there, and he wanted to see him on the way.
“There was a queue of very poor people waiting to have an audience with that guruji. He was a tantrik, a young man, who held a bottle of rum in his hand and would keep on dancing,” Mahesh recalled and said that as the tantrik looked at him, he immediately knew that Mahesh didn’t believe in his practice. The tantrik called them the next day and promised he would have a solution for them.
The next day, when they visited, the tantrik opened his cupboard and pulled out what looked like a ball in a wrapper. “He pulled out a piece and he made a pudiya out of it, and he said this is human flesh, which has been taken out from the ghats. He said, ‘take this and feed it to your potential investor and he will give you money’,” he shared.
Bhatt recalled thinking that they “had this key to this kingdom of money” and with this, they left for Gaya, where they met the potential investor. “Somewhere in the outskirts of Gaya, there was this zamindar, who used to sit behind this mosquito net and had security men holding guns,” he recalled and shared that they were trying to come up with plans of feeding this piece of flesh to him. The next day, they had an idea. “Then it struck us, to buy a paan and put this on a paan and give it to him,” he shared.
They went for the next meeting with the paan and convinced him to eat it and after a lot of pleading, the man agreed. “And slowly, he brought it close to his mouth and then, he started chewing it. We felt that we have hit the bull’s eye,” he said. Bhatt left from Gaya soon after this and a month later, he was cheery and enthusiastic because he believed that this would change his life. But, upon meeting his friend, he learnt that they never secured any financing from the man whom they fed the supposed human flesh.
Mahesh Bhatt recently celebrated his 77th birthday and is one of the most popular filmmakers in India.
