Actor Madhuri Dixit has often opened up about how her husband Dr Shriram Nene was unaware of her fame when they first met before marriage. After trying the knot with him in 1999, the actor moved to Denver and welcomed two sons – Arin and Ryan. In a recent interview, Madhuri recalled the time she was living abroad and her neighbours were amazed to know about her celebrity status. The actor also revealed that her husband hadn’t watched any of her films and only knew veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan.

During a conversation with ANI, the host asked her if Dr Nene had watched her Bollywood films. “No, not really, because he grew up there. He was born in London, and moved to the US when he was 7. He used to come here (India) for vacations when he was little. It was lesser when he grew up because there was college and everything. Maharashtrians are not so much into movies, it’s more about getting education. He didn’t watch films and he didn’t know Hindi,” she said.

The actor added, “He knew Marathi because his grandparents didn’t know English and he had to talk to them in Marathi. He is good with Marathi but didn’t understand Hindi at that point, now he does. He didn’t watch many films. He said that the only film he had watched was Amar Akbar Anthony, so he only knew Amitabh Bachchan.”

Revisiting the moment the couple met for the first time, Madhuri Dixit shared, “When I met him, he asked me what I do, and told I work in films and he thought it was nice. He didn’t realise the impact or who I was. I found that attractive because I could meet him without having any pre conceived notions about me, or how I should be. People who see my movies have thoughts in their mind about how I would be. It was refreshing to vibe with someone on a very personal level, there was no filter of being a star.”

She also recalled how her neighbours in Denver once suggested calling the cops after they noticed Madhuri’s fans driving around her house in their car. “I was in Denver because he was working there. The funny thing is that my neighbours were all Americans. They didn’t know who I was and we didn’t even tell them. One day my neighbour thought that someone was casing our house for a robbery. She asked if she should call the cops but I stopped her and told that I am an actress. They wanted to see the films and were excited that there’s a celebrity in the neighbourhood,” she said.

During the same interview, the 58-year-old was asked whom she now discusses her work with, the way she once consulted her mother in the early days of her career. “I run it by my family – my husband, kids. When I went with my next project’s script, my sons said, ‘Mom, really?’ I then told them that it’s a really nice story. They always support me with whatever decision I make. My husband always asks me if I am excited for a project or if I would feel happy to go on the set every day. It’s a creative process and you would want to feel supported,” she replied.
