Singer Kumar Sanu didn’t have any intention of giving his wife a single penny following their divorce, but a meeting with Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray changed things. He was compelled to leave his bungalow, Aashiqui, to his wife, who was pregnant with their third son at the time. She said in a new interview that she was blindsided by the divorce, and alleged that Sanu ‘tortured’ her during that time by denying her food and medicine, and forcing her to attend court dates while pregnant. She also accused him of having abandoned their sons, and said that were it not for Thackeray, she’d have received nothing.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, she recalled that Sanu would send her Rs 100 per day after moving out of the house. “He ran away. He even took the microwave and the fans with him. After that, he stopped milk and medicine deliveries to the house, but fortunately, both the milk man and the doctor continued visiting,” she said, adding, “You don’t know how much this man has tortured me and my three children.”

Rita said that during her pregnancy, she was also denied food. She couldn’t move around because she was unwell, so she had to steal food in her own house, and rely on the help of a family friend. “I would sneak downstairs into the kitchen and take some daal and rice, which I would feed my two sons,”  she said, blaming the fallout on Sanu’s sister. She said that they were enjoying his success before she moved in with her boyfriend, and seemingly encouraged Sanu to protect his interests from her.

Rita said that she continued to live in the bungalow during their divorce proceedings, which lasted eight years. “He even cut electricity to the house,” she said, adding that Bal Thackeray read an interview of hers in the newspaper, and asked Raj Thackeray to summon her to Matoshree. This was when Sanu was told to leave the house to Rita and move out. “I didn’t get justice anywhere; so, for justice, I went to Bal Thackeray,” Rita said. In the same interview, Rita also said that she deserves credit for supporting Sanu at a time when he was unemployed and singing for a mere Rs 100.
