Kiran Rao reminds Aamir Khan she’s his ‘ex-wife’ after he offers suggestions on how to be a better spouse: ‘I don’t need to know’

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao‘s successful professional collaboration has yielded critically acclaimed films like Dangal, Dhobi Ghat, Peepli Live, and Lapataa Ladies, India’s official Oscar submission this year. What’s remarkable is that their creative partnership has endured even after their divorce in 2021, following 16 years of marriage.

When asked about the secret to their successful collaboration, Kiran Rao attributed it to “a lot of patience.” She added, “It’s been amazing working with him; he is a powerhouse,” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India. Aamir Khan chimed in, “Divorce is a separate topic, but as creative people, we gel really well. We like each other’s minds, and we trust each other’s minds. So, I guess that’s why we work well; our sensibilities are similar.”

Kiran elaborated, “I think, like he said, our aesthetics are similar, and there are a lot of things that we like. But when we disagree, we take the trouble to convince each other. I’ll go to him and give him very good reasons why I feel the way I do. We respect each other’s opinion. I think that’s one of the reasons why the partnership has lasted.”

Aamir emphasised that their divorce didn’t affect their professional or personal relationship. “Divorce didn’t affect our relationship because it happens organically. So, divorce is the word that implies cleaving; you are moving away. We were moving away as husband and wife, but we were not moving away as human beings.”

In a lighthearted moment, Aamir revealed that after their split, he asked Kiran for advice on how to be a better husband, and in response she went ahead and provided an 11-point list, one of which noted that he talks too much. Aamir shared, “She said that where there is a gathering, and people are home for dinner, or anywhere we go out, you take over the conversation, and suddenly you are telling all these stories.”

Kiran jokingly intervened, “Now publicly you are going to take out the whole list?” Aamir playfully responded, “Tu chupp reh (you keep quiet)…” before continuing, “So, she said that you don’t allow other people to talk. I didn’t agree with her, but I wrote it down on notes, on my phone. I thought it would be useful.”

When Kiran expressed curiosity about the rest of the list, Aamir quipped, “Every day, I am working on them.” He jokingly offered, “She never asked me, ‘How can I be a better wife?’ Ask me sometime, I’ll show you the list.” Kiran chuckled, “Luckily, now ex-wife, so I don’t need to know.”
