‘Karisma Kapoor grew up in our house, still in touch with former mother-in-law’, says Sunjay Kapur’s sister; shocked that her kids weren’t ‘getting anything’

Following the controversy around Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband Sunjay Kapur's will, the businessman's sister give her two cents about the whole episode.

Sunjay Kapur and Karisma KapoorThe current will suggests that Priya Sachdev is the sole beneficiary from Sunjay Kapur's will.

The death of Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband, businessman Sunjay Kapur, shocked his family and friends. Sunjay’s family received another setback when his wife, Priya Sachdev, claimed that his will named her the sole beneficiary of all his assets. The Kapur family promptly contested the will and refused to let the Rs 30,000 crore empire just walk out of the door. Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, recently talked about the same and her relationship with Karisma as well, which she claimed, is quite strong, as she also described her as her “best friend.”

While talking to Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Mandhira reflected on her relationship with Karisma and said that they grew up together, and always had a very cordial relationship. She said, “Karisma has grown up in our house. We were best friends back then. It’s true that for a short period of time we weren’t talking to each other, but everything soon returned to normal very soon. She still talks to Mom and me. At the end of the day, she is not only a childhood friend, she is family for us. We have literally grown up side by side, so she is family for us, and she will always be. Even when we were not talking to each other during that brief period, our friendship didn’t end. That has never happened, and it will never happen.”

When asked about reading the will and the family’s reaction, Mandhira said, “We have read the will, and it just doesn’t seem normal to me. I don’t understand how my brother would cut off his own kids from the will. That was the first thing we heard, ‘Ki unke bachchon ko kuch nahi mil raha‘ (his children aren’t going to get anything). The whole thing is very strange. The first reaction came from my mother, and she was extremely disturbed and was in disbelief over the whole thing. My problem is that iss family ko majak bana diya hai (they have made a joke out of our family). My father worked very hard to build his legacy, and my brother took it forward. All of that is being ridiculed in front of the whole world, and that too, over money.”

Mandhira admitted that she has her suspicion over the legitimacy of the will. She said, “Honestly speaking, I am very suspicious about the whole thing. This is not how our family operates. People can say what they like, and it’s true that I didn’t talk to my brother for 4 years, but I grew up alongside him and lived my whole life with him. No matter what anyone says, I will always be his sister, because you can’t sever family ties and you can’t get rid of your blood. This family worked together to create this legacy, and here you are telling me that all of it will go to this one girl (Priya). My mother doesn’t own the house she built with my father. There is nothing normal about any of this.”

Sunjay and Karisma tied the knot in 2003. They shared two children – daughter Samaira and son Kiaan. The couple filed for divorce in 2014 and went their separate ways two years later. The business mogul passed away on June 12 in London due to a heart attack.

Karisma’s children have now moved to Delhi High Court, in order to claim their inheritance in Sunjay’s empire.
