Kareena Kapoor made her acting debut 25 years ago, and in a recent interview, she recalled her first day on the sets of her debut film, Refugee, and how she waited all day and all night before she was called to perform her first shot. Kareena’s debut film, Refugee, directed by JP Dutta, also marked the debut of Abhishek Bachchan. Kareena, who was just 19 at the time, recalled that she was eager and nervous to give her first shot. She was then told that the shot would happen at night, and her wait continued.

She shared with Brut India, “I waited all day for the shot, like, all day. And the shot didn’t happen. And then I was waiting all night. And then too no shot. I was like, ‘What is happening? Is the shot even happening? On your first film, you are like, ‘What is going to happen?’ I am just waiting her endlessly for the shot. And at quarter to four in the morning, the assistant director comes to me and says, ‘Shot is ready’. And he said, ‘It is your introduction shot’.”

Kareena recalled how director JP Dutta wasn’t the kind of person who would praise his actors after a good take. “JP sahib had a habit, he would not say okay. He would just take the shot and before you know, he would take the camera and go on to other side. That means the shot is okay. He just did the shot and it was my first shot of Refugee, when she lifts her veil and asks, ‘Paani milega?’ He said, ‘Camera, rolling, action,’ and I did it, and after that, ‘Cut’. He didn’t say anything. He said ‘Haan ji’ and he just took that camera and he started walking,” she recalled.

Kareena said that she then asked JP Dutta if the shot was okay and he replied in the affirmative. “I said, ‘But we did only one…’ because back then they had to print the shots, it was not digital. So I was like, ‘We did just one, if something goes wrong, what will happen? My whole career is at stake here’. He said yeah its fine, it’s a one take okay. Maybe I just got spoiled by that,” she shared.

Kareena was last seen in The Buckingham Murders.
