Filmmaker Karan Johar took a trip down memory lane and recalled when his late father. Yash Johar, kept praising him in front of the revered filmmaker Mani Ratnam. Karan, whose debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was yet to release, revealed how his father couldn’t contain his excitement about him and recounted an awkward encounter with Mani Ratnam.

On the Film Companion Directors Adda 2023, Karan said, “He (Yash Johar) thought I was the most gorgeous person on planet Earth, the best director. I used to get scared going anywhere with him because he would start showing off about me. I used to die because he met Mani sir at the same location where Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was being shot. Mani sir was making Dil Se, and he was shooting the ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ song, which, as a student, I wanted to go and watch.”

Karan continued, “He (Yash Johar)  kept gushing about me to Mani sir, and I’m trying to pinch him, saying, ‘Please, I beg you. I want to dig a hole and jump into it,’ because Mani Ratnam was god to all of us, you know, and continues to be. I went home and said, ‘Papa, you can’t, my film hasn’t been released.’ He says, ‘Nai, it’s your trumpet, if you don’t blow it, who else will?'”

Karan’s  directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, was released in 1998. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji in pivotal roles. Yash Johar passed away in 2004 after battling cancer. He was the producer of films like Agneepath (1990), Gumrah, Duplicate, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Kal Ho Naa Ho.
