Kanguva had quiet a disastrous start, contrary to what was expected of the magnum opus that spanned two periods. It disappointed both the audiences and critics, who majorly complained about the film’s poor screenplay and ‘headache inducing’ volume. The disappointment took a controversial turn when Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty blamed the makers for ‘innumerable last minute changes’. The situation only got worse when Neha Gnanavel, the wife of film’s producer KE Gnanavel Raja, shared a post with the intention to defend the film, but rather attracted backlash.
Among the many criticism, netizens also pointed out the limited screen time given to Disha Patani in the film. Replying to one such post, Neha wrote, “Angela’s character is not the whole movie Kanguva is about!!! Angela can’t be in 2.5 hours of film!! Basic so yes, she was there to look pretty!!! It’s one brain and perspective (director) presenting to crores of audiences! We welcome criticism not targeted propaganda.”
Her “look pretty” comment about Disha Patani attracted strong criticism, post which she deleted her now-viral comment. Netizens expressed their disappointment over her regressive commentary.
Previously, Jyotika penned a long note to defend her husband and actor Suriya’s attempt at trying something new in the world of cinema. In her note, the Shaitaan actress admitted that the sound in the film is “jarring in the first thirty minutes”, but also called it an “absolute cinematic experience”.
She wrote, “I’m surprised with the negative reviews from media and certain fraternities, as it’s not done by them to this high level for the most unintellectual big budget films I have seen earlier with age old stories, where women r stalked, double meaning dialogues r spoken and have the most over the top action sequences.”
She added, “It’s sad that they chose this much negativity for Kanguva on day 1, even before the first show was over (seemed more like multiple group propagandas) when it actually deserves an applause for the concept and effort taken by the team to create 3D and such a magnificent visual!”
Kanguva, directed by Siva, also stars actor Bobby in pivotal role, marking his Tamil film debut. The film opened to Rs 24 crore in all languages in India. However, it witnessed a drastic drop in its numbers over the weekend. In four days, the film has earned about Rs 54 crore India net, according to Sacnilk. It is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 350 crore.
