Actor Kalki Koechlin, in a recent interview, shared her experiences with polyamorous relationships, shedding light on the complexities and boundaries that come with non-traditional partnerships. Kalki, who was previously married to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, reflected on her past explorations, emphasising the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding between consenting adults. In polyamorous relationships, people have more than one romantic or sexual partner, sort of like an open relationship, with the consent of all parties involved.
When asked if monogamy was too much to expect in today’s world of endless options, Kalki emphasised that monogamy is a choice, just like polyamory. “I don’t think so, because monogamy is a choice. There is no point having options unless you choose something from the options. Just as polyamorous is a choice, it comes with its own set of very strict boundaries and rules, so is monogamy. You both or all parties agree to those rules and boundaries before you go into it,” Kalki told Hauterrfly in an interview.
Kalki was then asked if she can pull off a polyamorous relationship. To which she responded by saying, “Now that I am married and have a kid, I don’t think I got time for that sh*t, because you just don’t even have time to see your own partner,” she said with a laugh. “But I think that it has happened in the past, and again, I think you have to be very specific about your rules and boundaries.”
Elaborating on these boundaries, Kalki explained, “It means, perhaps it can’t be from your circle. I don’t think you can go as deep in a polyamorous relationship. Although I do know people who have managed to have a lifetime and have kids as well and do it. For me, it was a very different period in my life, I was much younger. I wasn’t interested in settling down, so it was okay. The idea was to be kind of each other’s main person but just also be like an experiment. I know people who have done but I don’t know if I would be able to be as invested in a long term.”
Through this interview Kalki seemed to have also revealed another significant update on her personal life, sharing that she has married her long-time partner, Guy Hershberg. The couple welcomed their daughter, Sappho, in 2020. Notably, Kalki had previously stated that she had consciously chosen not to get married to Guy, but has now confirmed that the two have tied the knot.
On the work front, Kalki was last seen in critically acclaimed film Goldfish and Ananya Panday-starrer Kho Gaye Hum Kahan.
