Actor Sooraj Pancholi, who has been accused of abetting the suicide of actor and model Jiah Khan, was spotted leaving for the CBI court from his Mumbai residence. After a decade, the special CBI court in Mumbai is expected to pronounce its verdict today in Jiah Khan suicide abetment case of 2013.
The Nishabdh actor died by suicide on June 3, 2013. Based on a letter seized on June 10, which was apparently written by the 25-year-old actor, Mumbai Police booked actor Sooraj Pancholi under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC and arrested him.
Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan claimed that her daughter was in an abusive relationship with Sooraj Pancholi and alleged that her daughter was murdered. In October 2013, she moved Bombay High Court seeking a CBI probe in the case. On Bombay High Court’s orders, the CBI took over the case from the Maharashtra Police a year later, in July 2014.
However, Sooraj has maintained that he shared a good relationship with Jiah Khan throughout their courtship. He had said, “My relationship with Nafisa (Jiah’s real name) was good throughout”. When asked about the claim by Rabia that it is not a suicide case but that of murder, Pancholi responded stating, “I am not responsible for Nafisa’s death.”
In an earlier interview with indianexpress.com, Sooraj, who made his acting debut in 2015, had shared how the trial has affected his life and career. He had said, “Every time I sign something or announce something, the complainants come up with some or the other articles in the newspapers. It is only to put me down, and they might have their own reasons to do so. Talking about facts and showing up in the courts, that they don’t do. People need to understand the reality of this case. The kind of immaturity the media has shown in this case is unfair, as it affects many lives attached to the case.”
Sooraj was then seen in Satellite Shankar (2019) and Time to Dance (2021).
