Actor Janhvi Kapoor has been compared to her late mother Sridevi, ever since she made her acting debut with Dhadak in 2018. But Sridevi never wanted this kind of pressure on her daughter and even warned Janhvi about it much in advance. In a recent interaction, Janhvi shared how the ‘baggage’ of her mother’s name ‘stressed’ her and sister Khushi Kapoor out. To cope with the constant comparisons, Janhvi tried to ‘detach’ herself from her mother.
At the recently held AajTak Agenda, Janhvi spoke highly of her mother and called Sridevi the “most versatile actor”. But Sridevi’s body of work did weigh down upon her daughters, and the late actor knew it would. “Mom had only told me that my first film and performance won’t be compared to her first film, it’ll be compared to her last film and she said to me, ‘This kind of pressure I wouldn’t even want my enemy to have.'”
But unfortunately, her daughters had to go through this pressure. “My sister and I would initially stress a lot, and would get very nervous, overworked with the baggage,” shared Janhvi. But then she took the comparisons in her stride.
Janhvi added, “But then I began to understand I’m being compared to mumma, so that’s the standard! I think that’s what started motivating me.”
However, the young actor ‘regrets’ detaching herself from her mother during the initial days of the shoot of Dhadak.
She shared, “When I started working on my first film, I was so conscious that I wanted to be completely detached from her because people anyway used to think that I got my first film because I am Sridevi Kapoor’s daughter. I don’t know what different trip I went on, that I will not take any help from my mother. I will act completely differently from my mom’s style of acting. I used to tell her not to come on sets. I used to feel I had an unfair advantage, a trump card. But now I feel I was foolish at that time. Main hoon unki beti, is sacchai se main bhag nahi sakti (I am her daughter and nothing can change that truth). Now that she is not here, this is my biggest regret.”
Sridevi passed away just a few months before the release of Janhvi Kapoor’s debut film Dhadak.
