Ever since the trailer of Jaane Jaan dropped people have been talking about Jaideep Ahlawat’s unique look in the film. Sporting an almost bald look, the actor plays a lovestruck teacher, obsessed with Kareena Kapoor’s character. At the launch event on Tuesday, Jaideep revealed that while he was excited to do something new in the film, director Sujoy Ghosh was scared that he’d reject the film because of the look.

Talking about his constant endeavour to do something new, Jaideep Ahlawat said that when he heard the script, he was quite excited. “Bohot zyada interesting tha. Yeh bohot alag tha (This was very interesting and different). However, I know dada (Sujoy Ghosh) was scared that I would say no. But for me, the look was just a part of the character. I really had a great time playing Naren, and didn’t take much time to say yes.”

The director called Jaane Jaan a love story even though the plot has elements of crime and thriller genre. He shared that given he was working on a story based on a book, scripting it became easier. “Yes, people will call it a thriller and other labels but for me, it’s a pure love story. It’s about this man, who could do anything in love, and didn’t expect anything in return. This character was so amazing and unique, and I needed my King Kong (Jaideep) to come and show that unrequited love. We also had Kareena Kapoor and then Vijay Varma is taking the mantle of three characters,” Ghosh said, talking about his cast.

Kareena Kapoor Khan on her OTT debut

Kareena Kapoor, who is making her digital debut with the film, spoke about playing Maya D’souza and how her focus was to get the performance right rather than worrying about her de-glam look. “You are used to seeing me in glamorous kind of roles on the big screen. So, if there’s a change in the look then it is also like ‘Oh god, this is slightly different’. The focus is also on the performance of Maya, more than anything else.”

She also opened up about how she remains relevant even after 20 years, stating that as an actor, she wants to keep trying different things. “For me, it is difficult [to do something different] because I have been known for playing Poo and Geet, this thing has been fixed in people’s minds. So, that has been a conscious effort that now I want to do different things, even though I have always tried [to do different things] but people talk about those roles, they don’t think of the films that I have done in the past like Dev, Chameli or even Omkara. They still go back to that but I am going to keep trying to do different things,” Kareena Kapoor shared, adding that she gets angry at how people only remember her bubbly characters.

A journalist also mentioned how Kareena Kapoor is used to ‘blockbusters’ and would be not worried about box office numbers for the first time. “I think Jaane Jaan will do amazing because I know everyone globally will watch it. Everyone is eagerly waiting for the film. And it’s not just because of me coming on OTT but it is also due to the team and our combination. I am sure on September 21, Netflix subscribers are going to triple.”

Vijay Varma also called his portrayal a ‘welcome change’ as he was playing a upright character after playing back-to-back negative parts. “There were two things that attracted me to this film. First, it was the role of a good police officer. I felt it was a welcome change for me and the audience who I’ve traumatised in the past with my portrayals on screen. So, this was a welcome, refreshing change for me. Secondly, the character demanded a certain kind of physical prowess and skills, which my very couch-friendly body was not familiar with, so I put myself in a grilling training for four months to get to where I have to.”
