Kareena Kapoor Khan’s much awaited streaming debut, the thriller film Jaane Jaan, unveiled its first trailer on Tuesday. Based on the bestselling mystery novel The Devotion of Suspect X, the film is directed by Sujoy Ghosh and also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in supporting roles, and will be released in three weeks’ time. The novel is also said to have served as inspiration for the blockbuster Malayalam language franchise Drishyam.

Kareena plays the role of Maya D’Souza in the film, which is set in the hill station of Kalimpong. Maya appears to be in an abusive relationship, which her neighbour Naren has a hunch about. Naren is played in the film by Jaideep, and the trailer portrays him as a creepy stalker. Vijay plays the cop Karan, who shows up in Kalimpong looking for Maya’s missing husband, and develops a romantic relationship with her. Karan and Naren are old friends, and he immediately asks Naren about his ‘hot padosi’, who also happens to be the prime suspect in his investigation. While the original novel was told through the perspective of a clinical maths teacher who helped his neighbour cover up the murder of her husband, Jaane Jaan seems to have been re-contextualised through the eyes of the main female character, with the maths teacher seemingly playing the killer. But this isn’t clear.

Sujoy is best known for his hit thriller Kahaani, which helped propel Vidya Balan to star status along with The Dirty Picture and No One Killed Jessica. His last theatrical film was 2019’s Badla, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu. He has since helmed a Netflix series, Typewriter, and most recently directed a segment in the anthology film Lust Stories 2.

Kareena was last seen in the epic drama Laal Singh Chaddha, in which her performance drew praise even if the film tanked commercially. Vijay has had a busy year; in addition to starring in Sujoy’s Lust Stories 2 short, he also appeared in the crime series Dhaakad and Kaalkoot. Jaideep was last seen in the film An Action Hero. Jaane Jaan is scheduled for release on Kareena’s birthday on September 21.
