The Hindi film industry has been experiencing a drought when it comes to good rom-coms, and Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor’s upcoming film Nadaaniyan might just break the streak—or it might not. The makers unveiled the film’s date announcement video on Thursday, and its plot hints at similarities to Netflix’s 2019 American teen romantic comedy The Perfect Date.

The clip features Khushi and Ibrahim in a classroom setting when Archana Puran Singh enters, reprising her iconic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai character, Miss Briganza. Borrowing her famous dialogue from the film, Archana asks, “Pyaar kya hai? (What is love?)” When Khushi fails to answer, she turns to Ibrahim, who delivers a textbook-perfect response, calling love “an arrangement.” Impressed by his answer, Khushi credits him Rs 25,000 and says, “To know more about our arrangement, watch our film Nadaaniyan on March 7.”

Nadaaniyan’s premise hint at a similarity with The Perfect Date. The Hollywood film featured protagonist Brooks Rattigan (played by Noah Centineo), who creates an app where people can pay him to act as the perfect stand-in boyfriend for any occasion. He starts this venture to fund his college education, but things take a turn when he unexpectedly falls for a girl he goes on a fake date with.

Nadaaniyan marks Ibrahim Ali Khan’s acting debut and also serves as the directorial debut of Shauna Gautam, who previously assisted Karan Johar on Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The film also stars Dia Mirza and Suniel Shetty and is produced by Karan Johar.
