The opening ceremony of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Saturday was nothing short of a spectacle. As the crowd settled in for the much-awaited clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the opening ceremony made sure to raise the bar right from the start. Leading the charge was none other than Shah Rukh Khan, who brought his signature energy to the event. He was joined by Shreya Ghoshal, Punjabi hitmaker Karan Aujla, and Disha Patani. And just like that, the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League was declared open.
Shah Rukh Khan had the Eden Gardens crowd go gaga when he got Virat Kohli to break into a dance to “Jhoome Jo Pathaan” from his blockbuster Pathaan. Not to be outdone, KKR’s rising star Rinku Singh jumped in, matching steps with King Khan to “Lutt Putt Gaya” from Dunki. The stadium roared with cheers. SRK then invited the BCCI and IPL top brass, along with the star performers and team captains from KKR and RCB, to join him on stage. Together, they sang the Indian national anthem.

SRK brought the house down with one of his trademark dialouges from Pathaan, saying, “Party Pathaan ke ghar rakhoge, toh Pathaan mehmaan nawazi ke liye zaroor aayega!” He followed it up with, “Toh chalo, shuru karte hain yeh celebration, like never before!” He then welcomed the night’s performers, Shreya Ghoshal, Disha Patani, and Karan Aujla on stage.

Bollywood diva Disha Patani lit up the stage in silver with her high-energy performance on “Pagol” song. But just as things were heating up, the broadcast suddenly cut away, with commentators (Sunil Gavaskar, Matthew Hayden) switching gears to talk about the opening match instead. The abrupt transition didn’t sit well with fans, who took to social media to vent their frustration. Many felt the moment was cut short, leaving them disappointed.
“Why did @JioHotstar cut off #DishaPatani’s hot 🥵 performance midway??” a disappointed user wrote on social media. Another said, “Broadcasters switched to commentary when Disha Patani is performing… Men:Cheating karta hai tu”

After Shah Rukh Khan, ace singer Shreya Ghoshal took over the stage. She treated fans to some of her most loved songs, including “Mere Dholna”, “Ghoomar”, and the powerful “Kar Har Maidan Fateh”. The crowd couldn’t help but sing along with her. She even belted out the hit track “Shami Shami”, and honestly, it felt like a mini Shreya Ghoshal concert for everyone at the stadium.
After a short break in Disha’s act, it was Punjabi hitmaker Karan Aujla’s turn to take over the stage. He kicked things off with his hit track “Softly” and followed it up with crowd favourites like “Hun Neend Ni Aundi”. One banger after another had everyone on their feet, vibing along.
