The Information and Broadcasting Ministry today constituted a committee under the leadership of acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal to look and suggest measures to revamp the censor board and suggest changes in the Cinematography Act. The move which has been welcomed from all quarters also provides hope to many filmmakers who have been troubled by the ruthless reign of current CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani.

Speaking to the IndianExpress.com, Benegal, however, said, “I don’t see it(panel) has anything to do with Mr. Pahlaj Nihalani.”
Elaborating further on what he wishes to achieve through the panel, Benegal said, “From time to time, we have to relook at many of our guidelines. Society is an entity where things keep changing, sensibilities change and viewers change. I hope we are able to make an entity that will start to look at cinema as one of the elements of social and artistic expression.”

Meanwhile, actor Anupam Kher, CBFC member Nandini Sardesai and many others applauded and welcomed the appointment of Benegal. “Shyam Benegal is well-known for his anti-censor board stand. He is against censorship. I am happy a person of his calibre has been appointed because he is not someone who is a fundamentalist. Person like him will bring positive changes. You can’t find fault with a person like Shyam Benegal. Hopefully things will work out for everybody’s advantage. I also hope the recommendations made will be accepted and implemented unlike the earlier panels the recommendations of which are still lying in cold storage,” Sardesai said.
