Gulshan Devaiah is one of the rare talents in the film industry who, despite having no prior connections, has made a name for himself through his unique choice of roles and movies and consistently excellent performances. Since his debut in director Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010), Gulshan has consistently secured substantial roles in major films, always prioritising quality over quantity.

One of his early successes came with his performance in director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic tragedy Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), which brought him widespread recognition. His portrayal of Bhavani, a character based on Count Paris from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, earned him considerable praise, even in a film headlined by Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

Recently, Gulshan Devaiah recalled working with Ranveer Singh during a challenging phase in the latter’s career. The Ulajh actor also admitted that he was often left exhausted just watching Ranveer’s boundless energy.

“His films were not doing well at that time. Though he received a lot of appreciation for director Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera (2013), it didn’t do well business-wise. I think that had started affecting him, whether he wanted it or not. His first film (Band Baaja Baaraat) had done well, but his second film Ladies vs Ricky Bahl ended up being average (grosser). Though he was getting that stardom, such movies (Lootera) give you an unexpected opportunity and then you start rooting for people to like it since it’s such a beautiful story made by a really good director. And people didn’t like it as much as he wanted. It was a bit dull in the beginning,” Gulshan recalled during a chat with Lehren Retro.

Gulshan, however, noted that Ranveer’s mood lifted once the musical sequences for Ram-Leela began shooting, returning him to his signature high-energy self. “He immediately came back to ‘his zone’. He is exactly like you think he is. Those who have known him since childhood also say that he’s been the same since then. His energy level is amazing. I used to walk away sometimes realising I can’t maintain the same energy. I used to get tired looking at his energy,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that Ram-Leela marked the first time Ranveer Singh worked with his now-wife Deepika Padukone and it was during the filming of this film that their romantic relationship blossomed. On the debut episode of Koffee with Karan Season 8, the couple revealed they were practically “inseparable” during the film’s production.
