Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, has always been outspoken in interviews, whether discussing her husband or their children. In a recent conversation with Kamiya Jani on Curly Tales, Sunita opened up about her fondness for alcohol, her yearly tradition of spending her birthday alone, and her love story with Govinda.
While giving a house tour to Kamya, Sunita pointed out to the bar counter and mentioned that it is her favourite spot. She said, “Govinda ne sabko bol ke rakha hai ki humaare ghar mai ek Dharam ji hain and Dharam ji mere favourite hain, so I don’t mind being here. This is my favourite spot and Blue Label is my favourite drink. I have it whenever I am happy. It is light to digest.”
Sunita added, “I am happy when it’s my kids’ birthday. For example, there was Yash’s launch recently. I was so happy that I completed a whole bottle. Even when there’s an India Vs Pakistan match, I also go for one. I don’t drink every day, only on Sunday. It is my cheat day.”
Sunita Ahuja’s love for alcohol extends to spending her birthday nights alone, enjoying drinks. However, Sunita balances this by dedicating her daytime to offering prayers to God. She shared, “I gave all these years to kids; now they are grown up. I want to live for myself. Hence, I now go out alone on every birthday. It has been 12 years. Sometimes, I go to a Maata mandir, Gurudwara, or any other temple. Jaise hi 8 bajta hai, bottle khol ke, akele cake kaatke, daaru pee leti hu. I keep it balanced by doing puja and party. I enjoy doing it alone. Janam hota hai toh akele, marte ho toh bhi akele.”
During the conversation, Sunita Ahuja also shared how she and Govinda transitioned from being enemies to becoming friends, and eventually, lovers. Sunita elaborated, “I knew Govinda when he was in the last year of his B.Com course and I was in 9th standard. He came to live at my sister’s house because she was married to his maama (uncle). We used to meet a lot there. We used to fight with each other a lot like cats and dogs. Mai ekdum Bandra girl aur yeh ekdum ghaati Virar boy. He used to ask why I bring my dog wearing shorts. Maine bola, ‘Aee, hatt abhi idhar se, tu kya Virar ka ladka’.”
She continued, “Ladte ladte kab naseeb phoota pata nahi chala, fir pyaar hogaya. I have a very different personality. I like to live and enjoy life. He is a little homely. He likes to be at home and meet his friends. It wasn’t a love at first sight situation for us, haatha paayi nahi hui vahi bahut hai. I was a tomboy, laga bhi deti do chaar.”
Govinda wasn’t particularly fond of Sunita’s tomboyish appearance, so she made a few adjustments to her style for his sake. “I had a bob cut. He used to say, ‘Yeh ladka hai, ladki nahi’. I never had girlfriends. I used to play goti and cricket. He asked me to grow my hair long. Then, I started oiling my hair every day; it grew to my knees. Love andha hota hai, aankhein ab khul rahi hain,” she said.
