Golden Globe nominations 2025: In yet another significant achievement for All We Imagine as Light, which has been making waves on the festival circuit and dominating this year’s film awards season, the movie has garnered two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. While the film earned a nomination in the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category, filmmaker Payal Kapadia secured a nod in the Best Director – Motion Picture category, marking the first time in 26 years that an Indian filmmaker has been recognised in this category since Shekhar Kapur’s nomination for Elizabeth in 1998.

Expressing her happiness over the recognition, Payal said, “I’m deeply honored by this nomination and grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India, All We Imagine as Light is still in theatres — please go watch it and support us.”

In the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category, All We Imagine as Light is competing against Emilia Pérez (France), The Girl with the Needle (Poland, Sweden, Denmark), I’m Still Here (Brazil), The Seed of the Sacred Fig (USA, Germany) and Vermiglio (Italy). Meanwhile, Payal is up against Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) in the Best Director – Motion Picture category.

Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon and Azees Nedumangad in key roles, All We Imagine as Light is an international co-production involving companies from France, India, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Italy. The film’s global acclaim began with its Grand Prix win — the second-most prestigious prize of the festival after the Palme d’Or — at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May this year.

However, when the Film Federation of India (FFI) chose the country’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, All We Imagine as Light was overlooked in favour of director Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, co-produced by Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan. This decision sparked significant controversy and the Golden Globe nominations for All We Imagine as Light have, in a way, validated the arguments of those who criticised the Oscar submission.

In her review of the movie, SCREEN’s Shubhra Gupta wrote, “The wonderful Kani Kusruti turns yearning into a full-time job, and just for her, this film which releases in India today, is worth every minute of your time.”
