Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel starrer Gadar 2 was released in theatres on August 11 and had an impressive run at the box office for the first four weeks. However, its performance started to decline with the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan. The film saw a slight uptick in its numbers on the 30th day, collecting Rs 1.45 crore after earning Rs 90 lakhs on day 29. The nett domestic collection of the film now stands at Rs 512.35 crore.
Gadar 2 clashed with Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 and Rajinikanth’s Jailer at the box office. Even with the release of Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl 2 on August 25, Gadar 2 managed to hold steady.
Following the release of Jawan, Gadar 2 dropped from the second position to the third spot in the list of the highest Hindi openers of 2023. Jawan now leads the pack with Rs 75 crores, followed by Pathaan at Rs 57 crores, and Gadar 2 at Rs 40 crores.
However, Gadar 2 has outperformed Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in terms of lifetime collections in the Hindi belt, although it is still chasing Pathaan’s all-time record of Rs 543 crore.
Gadar 2 is a sequel to the 2001 release Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. In the film, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprise their iconic roles of Tara and Sakeena. Helmed by Anil Sharma, the film also starred Utkarsh Sharma in a pivotal role.
The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film 1.5 stars. A part of the review read, “This iteration just reminds of you the loudness and the saccharine and the over-the-top dialoguing that new Bollywood had started shaking off, which we hoped was safely behind us. Clearly, in vain.”
