It’s like Shah Rukh Khan is coming to Shah Rukh Khan’s rescue at the box office. Even as Gadar 2 chases the all-time record posted by Pathaan earlier this year, another SRK-starrer is about to throw a wrench in the works this week. Gadar 2 is currently only around Rs 40 crore shy of overtaking Pathaan to become the biggest Hindi-language hit of all time, but this week’s Jawan might prove to be a hurdle.
On its 25th day in theatres, Gadar 2 is said to have made Rs 2.5 crore across India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This takes the film’s nett domestic total to Rs 503 crore. Pathaan’s all-time record collections stand at around Rs 543 crore. Combined, both movie have now made more than Rs 1,000 crore, not only bringing the Hindi box office not back to pre-pandemic glory, but also elevating it to unprecedented heights.
While Pathaan opened earlier this year and signalled Shah Rukh’s grand return to form after a five-year sabbatical, which itself came after three full years of commercial duds, Gadar 2 seems to have convinced the industry that sequels are a sure bet at the box office, especially when it comes to iconic IP such as Gadar. The first film, which was released in 2001, also emerged as a blockbuster. And 22 years later, Gadar 2 stands as the second-biggest Hindi release of all time.
The movie made Rs 40 crore on opening day, when it clashed against OMG 2. But it peaked on Independence Day, when it made Rs 55 crore. The movie made Rs 284 crore in its first week, Rs 134 crore in week two, and Rs 63 crore in week three. It has been observed that Gadar 2 picks up spectacularly over the weekends, and many have suggested that its opening could’ve been even higher had it not clashed against OMG 2, or if the infrastructure could accommodate its demand.
The film marks a huge return for star Sunny Deol, who hosted the party to end all parties over the weekend. It saw Shah Rukh, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan in attendance, alongside several industry stalwarts. Going by trends, it’s entirely possible that Gadar 2 overtakes Pathaan eventually; it did, after all, cross the Rs 500 crore mark four days earlier than the SRK-starrer. But all signs point to Jawan doing even bigger business. The action-thriller has already overtaken Gadar 2 in terms of opening day pre-sales, which currently stand at Rs 18 crore with three days to go. Pathaan holds the record for the biggest advance sales ever, with Rs 31 crore. Final pre-sales for Jawan are expected to be in the Rs 40 crore range, according to Sacnilk, which would indicate a new opening day record.
