Hrithik Roshan is hoping to regain some lost momentum at the box office with Fighter, the big-budget aerial action film directed by Siddharth Anand. Also starring Anil Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, the film was released in theatres on January 25, ahead of the Republic Day holiday weekend. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Fighter is expected to make Rs 25 crore on opening day, which would be among Hrithik’s top debuts, but around half of what his biggest hit, director Siddharth Anand‘s War, made on day one at the same time last year.
Also directed by Siddharth, Fighter sold over Rs 8.4 crore worth of advance tickets prior to its release, and was reportedly produced on a budget of Rs 250 crore. Hrithik has had a successful partnership with the filmmaker; they previously worked together on Bang Bang! and War. Incidentally, both these films delivered the top debuts of Hrithik’s career, and there’s now a chance of Fighter joining that list. The film’s box office earnings are expected to pick up on Republic Day, Friday, which is a national holiday.
Bang Bang!, which was released in 2014, made Rs 27 crore on opening day, while War made Rs 53 crore on day one, setting a new record that has since been broken. If Fighter is able to earn just Rs 50 lakh more than Krrish 3’s Rs 25.5 crore opening a decade ago, it will become Hrithik’s third-biggest debut. Siddharth’s personal biggest debut remains Pathaan, which made Rs 57 crore on day one, same time last year.
Hrithik has starred in only one film since 2019’s War, which made over Rs 300 crore in India. His last release was the gangster drama Vikram Vedha, co-starring Saif Ali Khan. The film was viewed as an under-performer, making below Rs 80 crore in India. But in the pre-pandemic era, Hrithik’s star power took even the drama Super 30 and the revenge thriller Kaabil past the coveted Rs 100 crore mark domestically.
