Express Film Club by Screen: Payal Kapadia graces the show following Delhi’s first screening of her film All We Imagine As Light

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, continues to win accolades and appreciation globally. The film, starring, Divya Prabha, Kani Kusruti and Chhaya Kadam in lead roles, is all set to release in India on November 22. Payal sat down for a conversation with film critic Shubhra Gupta after the film’s first screening in Delhi at Express Film Club by SCREEN, which was held at Alliance Française de Delhi on November 8.

Speaking in front of an audience that including French and Indian cine fans and dignitaries, Payal said about the accolades earned by her film, “With this film, everything that we have gotten beyond making this film has been a bonus. So, whatever comes our way, we are just so happy that it’s there.”

Talking about the film’s release in India and the struggles independent filmmakers in distributing their films, Payal added, “One of the nicest things is that we got distribution in India, which I think is really important. A lot of independent filmmaker manage to get the money to make the film but it isn’t shown in cinemas. The distributors and exhibitors don’t generally take risk, I am glad that Spirit Media made sure that it doesn’t get lost. People are going to buy a ticket! Please buy a ticket on November 22. I have never had a film distributed before.”

Payal Kapadia’s film has two Malayali nurses fronting a story which grapples with the complexities of leaving home, and finding roots amid inter-generational friendship.
