When Emraan Hashmi made his acting debut in 2003 with Vikram Bhatt’s Footpath, he was introduced as ‘Farhan Hashmi’ in the credits. In a new interview, the actor shared the story behind changing his name to Farhan, and then back to Emran, but with an extra ‘A’.
Recently, Hashmi spoke to Mashable India, and revealed that it was on the insistence of his grandfather that he was named Farhan before entering showbiz. He said, “I think the credits of my first film referred to me as Farhan Hashmi. I did change my name to Farhan. This was on the insistence from my grandfather, because of numerology.”
He added, “To become an actor, the gentleman had advised changing my name to Farhan. The other option was make it Emran, but with an additional ‘A’, which it is now.” Emraan first chose Farhan, but soon changed back to his original name when the film flopped.
“After the first film flopped, we changed it to Emraan, and the second film became a hit, so we kept the name Emran with an additional A. That hit was a validation,” the actor shared. Emraan’s second release was Anurag Basu’s Murder. The film was produced by his uncle Mukesh Bhatt, and also starred Mallika Sherawat. It earned the actor the tag of a ‘serial kisser’.
Emraan was last seen as the antagonist opposite Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in Tiger 3. He has the Dinsey Plus Hotstar series Showtime lined up next. Directed by Mihir Desai and Archit Kumar, the show is touted to be an “epic saga of legacy and ambition in the world of cinema”.
