Emergency box office collection Day 7: Kangana Ranaut’s disastrous film made Rs 8 crore less than Alia Bhatt’s Jigra in first week

Emergency box office collection Day 7: Kangana Ranaut hasn't delivered a hit in years. Her last few releases, such as Thalaivii, Dhaakad, and Tejas, were also major bombs.

Emergency box office collection Day 7: The Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency, which she also directed, has had a terrible run at the box office. On Day 6 and 7 of release, the historical drama could manage to earn only around Rs 1 crore. So far, the total collection of the film stands at Rs 14.4 crore, as shared by industry tracker Sacnilk. Emergency is a biopic of the former PM Indira Gandhi.

Emergency had an overall overall 7.12% Hindi Occupancy on Wednesday, and is about to fade away from theatres. By comparison, the Alia Bhatt-starrer Jigra collected approximately Rs 22.45 crore during its first week at the box office. Jigra was seen as a box office flop, something that Kangana seemed to allude to in a cryptic social media post last year. Kangana has often taken pot-shots at Alia, but hasn’t delivered hits like Alia has.

Here’s a day-wise collections breakdown of the Emergency in India so far:

Day 1 (January 17): Rs 2.5 Cr
Day 2 (January 18): Rs 3.6 Cr
Day 3 (January 19): Rs 4.25 Cr
Day 4 (January 20): Rs 1.05 Cr
Day 5 (January 21): Rs 1 Cr
Day 6 (January 22): Rs 1 Cr
Day 7 (January 23): Rs1 Cr (early estimates)
Total: Rs 14.40 Cr

Kangana has had a difficult run in the last few years, with films such as Thalaivii, Tejas, and Dhaakad delivering abysmal returns at the box office. Emergency was released at around the same time as Ram Charan’s Game Changer, and Rasha Thandani and Aman Devgan’s debut film, Azaad. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, Azaad’s collections dropped to the Rs 50 lakh mark.

The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave Emergency 1.5 stars and wrote in her review, “Kangana Ranaut’s confused Indira Gandhi biopic is weak in craft.” She added, “In a preposterous sequence, Manekshaw, Indira and the members of the Parliament join in a song. Not even Kangana’s undoubted competence as an actor can save it.”

Emergency faced many difficulties in its road to release, and was significantly delayed after the CBFC didn’t give it a censor certificate. It is now facing fresh legal issues. Kalpana Singh. the daughter-in-law of renowned poet Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’, has filed a petition claiming that the film used a famous line from Dinkar’s poem ‘Singhasan Khali Karo Ki Janata Aati Hai’ in its promotional material and song without permission.
