Despite facing tough competition from Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, Ayushmann Khurrana’s comedy-drama Dream Girl 2 appears to be standing firm and witnessing a noteworthy performance at the box office.
Following a decent opening, Dream Girl 2 recorded Rs 16 crore (nett) on Sunday, experiencing a notable 14.12 per cent increase in its domestic earnings, according to early estimates shared by industry tracker Sacnilk.
On its release day on Friday, the Raaj Shaandilyaa directorial generated a revenue of Rs 10.69 crore and subsequently, it experienced improved performance during the weekend, amassing Rs 14.02 crore on Saturday. Dream Girl 2’s total India nett currently stands at Rs 40.71 crore. According to Sacnilk’s projection, the film is expected to attain an India nett of Rs 5 crore on Monday.
On Sunday, the Ayushmann Khurrana movie witnessed an overall 48.85 per cent Hindi occupancy. Initially, during the morning shows, the movie saw a 24.69 per cent occupancy within the Hindi market. However, as the day unfolded, the percentages experienced a consistent increase, rising to 54.01 per cent during the afternoon showings and peaking at 66.80 per cent for the evening shows. During the night shows, the footfall slightly dipped and the movie recorded an occupancy of 49.89 per cent.
These numbers are currently showing promise, given that even in their third week of screening, both Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 continued to do well on Sunday, achieving earnings of Rs 17 crore and Rs 3.71 crore, respectively.
Meanwhile, actor Ayushmann Khurrana recently expressed his happiness over Dream Girl 2 getting a great start at the domestic box office.
“It feels amazing to deliver my career’s best opening with Dream Girl 2. Dream Girl is a franchise that has given me a lot of love and I’m really happy with the start that Dream Girl 2 has got at the box office,” Khurrana said in a statement.
“As an entertainer, it feels amazing to bring people to theatres and experience them having a great time. Dream Girl 2 is a film that delivers entertainment in spades. It has a big promise that people will laugh their hearts out and it is good to note that the film has lived up to the expectations to take this solid start at the counters,” he added.
Directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, Dream Girl 2 is a sequel to Khurrana’s 2019 hit of the same title. The actor reprises his role of Karam, who decides to cross-dress as Pooja to make enough money to marry the love of his life, played by Ananya Panday.
The film also stars Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and Manoj Joshi in key roles.
In her review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote: “Dream Girl 2, touted as the ‘spiritual successor’ of the 2019 film of the same name, repeats most of the original cast in its clearly-stated intention of pushing gender boundaries a couple of notches higher. Which is a good thing, and gives this 2023 outing its edge. The not-so-good thing is making us feel the stretch in the two hours twenty minutes run-time, despite the non-stop array of characters.”
