Dhanashree Verma and Yuzvendra Chahal’s divorce after five years of their marriage was quite a difficult period in their lives. The cricketer stirred controversy after he turned up in court wearing a T-shirt that read “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy” and spoke about his divorce. Now, Dhanashree has opened up about the separation and how it affected her family.

In a recent interaction with Humans of Bombay, Dhanashree admitted that her divorce was “confusing.” She also shared that trolling affected her family more than it affected her, and she had to take care of her parents’ well-being at a time when she was in dire need of support. She said, “I had to stay strong to make my parents feel better. We belong to this generation, so we know not to pay attention to negative comments, but how do you explain that to your parents? My parents’ friends would call them. ‘Yeh kya ho gaya?’ It was a delicate situation because I also needed strength and so did my parents.”

She further added, “There were days when my mother would actually give up and feel sad, and there were times when my parents kept their phones away. It was so overwhelming and not required because parents feel so much pressure from society. And then when they have to deal with something like this, how do they fix that? There were days I had to strictly tell them, ‘Don’t use your phones, stop answering calls’.”

Dhanashree admitted that though Yuzvendra was in a much more powerful position, her parents stood firmly by her side and even advised her to get out of the marriage. She shared, “My parents kept reminding me that this is not who you are. To even take that decision requires a lot of courage. Knowing that you are with someone who is more powerful than you, to even come to that decision of leaving that partnership requires a lot of courage, and my parents reminded me of that every day. They kept telling me how proud they are that I made this decision. It’s not easy.”

Talking about why divorce shouldn’t be celebrated, she reflected, “Divorce is not something that you celebrate. It is something very sad, emotional. Never forget that it’s not just you or the other person, it’s both families involved in this entire process. People who genuinely care about you, who love you, everyone is dealing with the same emotion. Everybody is sad and then there is the media circus. You have to be mature about it. I chose maturity over passing immature statements because I don’t want to disturb his or my family values.”

Dhanashree also discussed the trolling and media scrutiny she faced after her divorce, sharing how she chose to remain focused on her work instead of reacting. She said, “I haven’t healed completely but I am working towards it. Silence is not easy, it takes a lot of a person to just stay silent.”

In an earlier chat with Raj Shamani, Yuzvendra said that he was faking their relationship towards the end.
