Bollywood in the ’90s was a different beast altogether, and filmmakers were happy staying in the ‘family entertainment’ space. However, Rakesh Roshan pushed the envelope with his 1997 film Koyla. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Deepshikha Nagpal, the movie had a scene where the latter ‘bares it all’ in front of the camera. Deepshika faced a lot of flak for the scene, and she recently opened up about what all went on behind the scenes.
While talking to Hindi Rush, Deepshikha recalled her experience on Koyla, and its aftermath. She recalled reading the scene and wondering exactly how Roshan was going to shoot it. “So I asked Rakesh sir, ‘When are we going to shoot ‘that’ scene? He asked me, ‘You remember everything?’ I said, ‘Of course.’ So he told me about the scene, and my mom was sitting in the same room. That is what I respect about him, that he came, sat down, and explained everything to me,” said Deepshika.
She added, “I told him, ‘Don’t worry,’ and then I explained to him exactly how we were going to shoot the scene. I told him to keep the camera at shoulder height so that my tube top isn’t visible. That height made it look like I was taking off my dress, but I was still fully clothed. I wore a swimming costume for the shot from behind, and it was done without any problem. I was still wearing my jeans, by the way, when everything was shot. He (Roshan) was surprised that the scene was completed that easily.”
Deepshika clarified that it was her technical knowledge about how films were shot that helped her pull off that scene. She said, “I know that I am wearing everything while shooting, but when you look at the scene, you just think, ‘Oh my god! looks like she is stripping.’ If I didn’t have the technical knowledge, I would never have been able to do it.”
But because of its nature, the scene became controversial among fans. Recalling the aftermath, she said, “Tab toh hungama ho gaya tha (Back then people went crazy over it). ” My people told me, ‘Tumne yeh kya kiya hai? Kapde utare hai tumne screen par (What have you done? You removed your clothes in front of the screen.’ These were my own people, and I used to cry all the time. I remember that my daughter used to break the CD of Koyla. I used to wonder, ‘What did I do?’ It seemed that this is all I have done in my life, and people made it seem that my kids won’t respect me.”
Another point of discussion regarding the infamous scene was that it involved veteran actor Amrish Puri, who was 65 years old at the time. Deepshika was just 20 years old.
