Comedian Onkar Yadav, who hails from Haryana, spoke about his parents’ child marriage in a viral stand-up comedy bit that he shared on his YouTube channel a few months ago. In a recent interview with Prakhar Gupta, Onkar spoke about his own brush with child marriage, and said that the agreement dissolved a few years later, when he had entered his teens.

Discussing Haryanvi culture on Prakhar’s podcast, Onkar was asked if it is true that he had a child marriage, and he said that this isn’t entirely true. “Not a full-full child marriage,” he said, as Prakhar asked what he means. “My brother was getting married, and the girl’s family saw me and thought that I would be a good candidate for their daughter. We were both in the first grade. So they sealed the deal,” he said.

Onkar Yadav said that as a child, he was quite happy with the arrangement. “I was happy, my parents were happy… My marriage was decided when I was in the first grade, and by the time I was in the seventh grade, I thought that I was set in life. All I was worried about was my studies, because I knew that I didn’t have to worry about getting married. But, when I was in seventh grade, the girl’s family lost interest.”

He said that the girl’s family lived in ‘the city’, and didn’t know that Onkar’s parents had also got married as children. “In my household, it was a serious matter. It was assumed that I would pass the 10th and 12th grades, and then it was up to me if I wanted to study further, but my marriage had been fixed. But when I went to the seventh grade, her parents said, ‘Do you still believe in all this? Our daughter is anyway three inches taller than him.'” He concluded, “Phit toot gayi shaadi.”

Onkar Yadav said that after the arrangement was cancelled, he would get annoyed at the mere mention of the girl’s name. In his stand-up video, Onkar had told stories about his parents’ marriage when they were just 11 and 12. He said that his grandfather had seven children, all of whom were married off as kids.
