Days after the Parliament notified the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), four years after it was passed, the uproar both among citizens and celebrities, refuses to die down. The Act seeks to fast-track Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians – with the exception of Muslims – who migrated to India owing to religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Celebrities from Bollywood and South film industries — Kangana Ranaut and South star Thalapathy Vijay — have once again, taken to their social media handles to express their views on the decision, their opinions are different from each other.
Kangana Ranaut shared an image featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, alongside the caption CAA, accompanied by emojis of the Tricolour flag, on her Instagram Story. The Queen actress also a 2014 video where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seen justifying the importance of CAA. The 36-year-old in the caption, wrote, “Before you make an opinion or emotion about CAA, first understand what it stands for? (sic),” emphasising that people should avoid forming opinions about the act without first understanding its purpose.
The Centre’s decision to implement CCA didn’t go well with Tamil actor and politician Vijay, who criticised the Centre’s move and urged the Tamil Nadu government to refrain from implementing the act in the state. Vijay, who recently launched his political party Tamizhaga Vetrik Kazhagam, posted a statement on the party’s social media, calling it “unacceptable” and “divisive.”
Vjijay issued a statement against CAA
“It is not acceptable to implement any law like the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) in an environment where all citizens of the country live with social harmony. The leaders should ensure that this law does not get implemented in Tamil Nadu,” the statement originally issued in Tamil read. Previously, the actor had announced that his party would contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
