After the thunderous success of Gadar 2 in 2023, Sunny Deol will now star in Border 2. The original film, directed by JP Dutta, released 27 years ago and was one of the biggest hits of its time. On Thursday, Sunny announced Border 2 with an Instagram post. In the video shared with the post, the actor says in the voice over that he is coming back to fulfill the promise he made 27 years ago.
He shared in the caption, “Ek fauji apne 27 saal purane waade ko pura karne, aa raha hai phirse. India’s biggest war film, #Border2.” The film is being produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta and Nidhi Dutta. Border 2 will be directed by Anurag Singh, who previously directed Akshay Kumar-starrer Kesari. He has also directed Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Punjabi film Punjab 1984, and the first two films of the Punjabi romcom franchise Jatt & Juliet.
The original film had an ensemble cast which also included Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Rakhee, Pooja Bhatt, among many others. It was rumoured that Ayushmann Khurrana could be a part of Border 2 but his name is not a part of the initial announcement. The 1997 film was based on the Battle of Longewala during the India-Pakistan war of 1971. The makers are yet to announce the premise of Border 2.
Based on the initial announcement, the film will feature a revamped version of “Sandese Aate Hain.” The song is a part of the Instagram post, which also tagged lyric writer Javed Akhtar and original music composer Anu Malik, along with singer Sonu Nigam. Javed won the National Film Award for his work on the song’s lyrics. The original song also had the vocals of Roop Kumar Rathod but back in the day too, Rathod was not nominated for as many awards for the song, and Nigam had expressed his grief about the same.
In an earlier chat with podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, Sunny had said that Border 2 was first being made in 2015 but was shelved because Sunny’s films weren’t doing well at the time. “We wanted to do this even earlier. I remember in 2015… But then my film didn’t work. So log ghabra ke nahi banana chah rahe the (People were scared to make it). Now everyone wants to make that.”
Presently, Sunny is also working on a film titled Lahore 1947, which is being directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, and also stars Preity Zinta.
