Trust actor Swara Bhasker to call out what she sees as unfair. The actor took to Twitter on Friday, and complained about the cuts that have been mandated by the Central Board of Film Certification for director Anubhav Sinha’s new film Bheed. Starring Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, and an ensemble of respected actors, the film is set during the earliest stages of the first Covid-induced lockdown in 2020.
Reacting to a journalist’s tweet about the cuts imposed on the film, Swara wrote, “Nothing stings like facts.. In India we have a new affliction: Allergy to facts,” and added the hashtags ‘Bheed’ and ‘censorship’. Some of the purported cuts include the shortening of a scene that shows police brutality, and the complete removal of PM Narendra Modi’s speech announcing the lockdown. The speech was also included in the trailer, but was removed after an initial round of backlash.
Bheed has been attracting controversy ever since its first trailer debuted some days ago. Detractors took offence to the film drawing overt comparisons to the Partition of 1947 and the first lockdown, which led to a mass-migration of daily wage workers from major cities to small towns and villages. But with the country at a standstill, millions were stranded on the roads, oppressed and rescued by their compatriots.
Swara is no stranger to controversy herself. She often finds herself at the receiving end of online abuse because of her strong political views. The actor recently tied the knot with activist and politician Fahad Ahmed, and managed to attract trolls even then.
