Director Anubhav Sinha’s black and white film Bheed released in theatres on Friday to a positive response. Starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, Bheed traces multiple characters as they navigate the earliest stages of the coronavirus-induced nationwide lockdown in 2020.

According to the makers, Bheed managed to earn Rs 42 lakh on its opening day. On Saturday, it garnered Rs 62 lakh, thereby taking its total collection to Rs 1.04 crore. Sinha’s previous theatrical release, Anek, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, had minted Rs 1.77 crore on its first day in theatres.

Bheed received mixed reviews from film critics. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta thought that the context was missing from the film. A section of her review read, “With the context missing, this well-intentioned film becomes less than its powerful moving parts. In many ways, ‘Bheed’ feels like a companion piece to ‘Article 15’, in which Sinha had raised the scourge of caste effectively, but was called out for doing it through the prism of an upper caste ‘hero’.” The film found itself at the centre of a controversy after the release of its first trailer. A section of the audience took offence at the overt comparisons being drawn to the 1947 Partition and the lockdown-induced mass migration. Bheed was also put through rigorous censorship, and T-series distanced itself from the film, leading to further controversy.

Meanwhile, holdover releases Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway did better business on Friday. While the Rani Mukerji-starrer earned Rs 80 lakh on its eighth day, Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s romantic comedy made Rs 3.39 crore on its 18th day. The total collection of the Luv Ranjan directorial is now approximately Rs 125 crore.

While Bheed failed to generate much noise at the ticket counters, this week’s Hollywood release John Wick: Chapter 4 pulled people to theaters in huge numbers. As per the early trends, the action-thriller earned Rs 10 crore on Friday. Going by its opening numbers, the film is expected to set new box office benchmarks for the franchise.
