‘Aunties wonder why Karan Johar isn’t selling jewellery at his brand’s store,’ says KJo’s business partner: ‘He has other things to do’

Karan Johar is known as a filmmaker but he has his fingers in every pie. The director-producer is also an investor in a jewellery brand called Tyaani, and in a recent interview, his partner, Shravan Satyani, said that when older women visit their stores, they often wonder why Karan is not around. He also shared that Karan pushed them to build an international brand and create men’s jewellery as well, as Karan could foresee that this was a growing segment in the jewellery market.

In a chat shared on Create Wealth with Sandeep Jethwani YouTube channel, Shravan shared that he could see partnering with Karan for his brand because of the filmmaker’s strong aesthetic. “Karan is a friend and when we sat down to analyse how we are going to reach out to larger audiences. Upon speaking with Karan multiple times, I realised you will not get a more solid individual like him who understands his art and craft, and at the same time, his aesthetics are brilliant,” he said as he spoke about partnering with Karan.

Shravan said that when older women visit their stores, they often ask about Karan. He also shared that Karan is quite involved in the business, in terms of setting their design language. “A lot of aunties ask us this question, ‘Karan Johar dukaan mein dikhayi nahi de raha (We can’t see Karan Johar in the store)’. I am like, ‘He has other things to do’,” he shared. He then added that he meets with Karan once a week and he is “very hands on, great vision so it helps me stay on my toes.”

He shared that Karan was the one who pushed them to focus on men’s jewellery. “A large part of our new upcoming men’s collection has been based on Karan actually badgering me and saying, ‘You are taking men’s jewellery very lightly, it’s a huge segment’,” he said and added that while Karan does not invest all his time on designing, he is the face of the brand and sets the vision for the team. “The design aesthetics… a lot of the foundation has been laid by Karan. I will not say that Karan invests his entire time into the design front because he is the face of the brand but he sets a vision for us to work around,” he said.

Karan Johar was recently honoured with a National Film Award for his film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
