AR Rahman’s composition of Rockstar’s ‘Kun Faya Kun’ is considered one of his finest compositions and in a recent interview, singer Javed Ali opened up about the recording of the song and compared the experience of recording this song to praying. Filmed on Ranbir Kapoor, the song was written by Irshad Kamil and carried the vocals of Javed, Rahman, Mohit Chauhan and Nizami Brothers.
Javed, in a chat with The Music Podcast, shared that he was ready to record the song just like any other song but Rahman then made him feel like this was a prayer. “I remember I was singing ‘Kun Faya Kun’ and I was just standing there, ready to record. He asked have you done ‘wazu’? He said please do that first, so I did that sincerely. Even after doing ‘wazu’, I put on a cap and that’s when I recorded the song,” he recalled.
Javed recalled that while recording the song, the entire studio was blacked out and they just had the flicker of a candle. “The entire studio was blacked out, we only had a candle light. It was just Irshad saab (Kamil, lyricist), Rahman sir and me, just the three of us and we recorded the song. It felt like we were all praying and people can feel that too when they listen to the song. Even now when I perform the song on stage, I cover my head,” he said.
Javed mentioned his experience of working with Rahman and said that the composer really respects the inputs of the singer. He shared, “He gives a lot of freedom to his artists. If I have an input in a song, he really respects it. I have learnt a lot of techniques from him. There is a divine energy in his surrounding area.”
Javed and Rahman first collaborated for 2008’s Jodha Akbar where he sang ‘Jashn-e-Bahara’. They also worked together on Raanjhana’s Tum Tak and in an earlier chat with Hindustan Times, Javed had shared that cut his vacation short to record the song with Rahman. “When I reached there, Irshad sir (Irshad Kamil; lyricist) and Aanand L Rai (director) sir were there. Rahman sir had a tune, so Irshad sir weaved lyrics to the tune and I recorded. We added some great variations to the song and I loved how I sounded in Tum Tak. It’s one of my best songs and I feel blessed to have got the opportunity to work on it,” he said.
