Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s unreleased Kennedy, starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. But the film’s release was held up amid financial troubles at ZEE Studios. In a recent interview, the filmmaker spoke about the delay, and coming to terms with such setbacks. “Kennedy is locked and has been cleared by the censors. But ZEE has lost a lot of money on the recent films they released. And all the people who produced the film have left the company,” shared Anurag Kashyap during a recent chat with The Hindu.
Kashyap also shared that he had written a film for Malayalam star Mohanlal, and wanted Rajeev Ravi, his longtime cinematographer, to direct it. He shared how the project didn’t take off, and he refurbished the story for Kennedy.
Kashyap also added that he had tried pitching another show to a streaming platform. He added that the involved platform “really wanted it”, but the feedback he got was “too insecure and algorithm-based”.
“It was destroying the soul of the show. I was pitching something else and they wanted to turn it into Money Heist. I folded my hands and left,” shared the director.
Anurag said that that content is shaped by data sheets culled from second-by-second user behaviour,
In the past, too Anurag opened up about Kennedy. He has had screaming matches with those responsible for its delay. He shared in an old interview that as many as five of his projects are currently in limbo, and that he has detached himself from Kennedy in particular.
